  Prologue

  Mekka

“Where is she?” I yell, practically barreling through the Alpha’s front door.

Several people raise their head, but not the ones I’m looking for, or the perfect angel who owns my soul. My Aspen. I’ve been freaking out ever since she cut our connection. Leaving work, I pushed my Challenger all the way back to pack lands, driving a neck breaking 120 mph. Now that I’m here, what I see is worse than what I was picturing in my head. Scattered all around the main house, the injured were everywhere as well as a couple of prone bodies of the dead. It’s been awhile since the Greywolf pack has seen any action. In this new day in age, wolves fought through lawyers over petty squabbles, like land of mates, or issues with other supernaturals, but nothing like this. You could tell a fierce battle went down here. The normally pristine grass has scorched marks scattered throughout and the smell of blood was thick in the air, kicking my anxiety up a notch, but even though these people are my pack, they’re not the ones I’m worried about right now.

“Mekka,” Ethan shouts as he waves me over to the Alpha’s office.

Following him inside, I take in the grim faces of everyone around me. The Alpha, Tyler, is leaning over his mate, Aspen’s mother, pressing a cold compress to her forehead while she lies on the leather settee with her hand over her stomach. Tyler’s Beta Gabe, the twin’s father, is staring out the corner window and seemed to be lost in a trance. Otto, Alpha’s other Beta, is searching through a bunch of papers scattered all over Alpha’s desk. I don’t see his twin brother Aaron anywhere, which is odd since they’re always together, plotting and strategizing. Walking over to Ethan, I asked the only question I care for an answer to.

  “Where is she?”

Taking a deep breath, he looks at me and the look in his eyes gives me the answer before he can even voice it. The only answer that could tear my world apart.

“He has her,” he replies in a broken voice, and I lean against the wall, fearing my legs will give out.

  “How?” I ask softly.

“Her father’s Beta held a knife on her mother and threatened to kill her. Aspen sacrificed herself to save her.”

Of course she did. Aspen is nothing like the evil bitch from the twin’s past. She reformed herself into a better person, and apparently a self sacrificing one at that. Hearing his words, Aspen’s mother starts to cry and Alpha shushes her, trying his best to calm her down.

“So we’ll get her back then,” I say with conviction. “Wolfhaven is what? Only a day away. Where’s Logan? We can leave right now." I was ready and geared up for a fight. No way in hell was I leaving my girl to deal with her crazy ass dad. Not with what I seen in her memories when her friend April did a spell out in the Alpha’s backyard to save us from going to war with the Mages.

“He’s still recovering. He almost got his whole side ripped off. He probably would have died if it weren’t for Aspen’s True Alpha blood running through his veins, knitting his skin back together."

I’m shocked to hear that. Logan is a kickass fighter, but I have to remember he was going up against seasoned fighters, plus Aspen’s father’s pack had surprise on their side, which makes me wonder how the fuck did they get past the gates in the first place?

“How did this happen? How did they get through the gates?” I ask, voicing the question out loud.

“Alpha’s bitch of a daughter let them in,” Otto answers and I’m surprised to hear the venom in his voice. Usually he’s milder than that, but that’s when his brother is around to balance him out.

“Careful Otto. She’s still my daughter, no matter what she did,” Tyler says from his mate’s side.

“You expect me to hold my tongue after that spoiled, sorry excuse of a wolf got my brother killed as well as countless others,” he shouts.

And I stare wide eyed hearing that his brother is dead. Fuck, no wonder why he’s going off the handle right now.

“Wolves that you’re supposed to protect are scattered all over your yard, injured or dead all because she let the enemy in through the gates, and for what? Because she couldn’t have what wasn’t hers in the first place.”

“Kassie did this,” I interrupt as I watch Alpha’s face fall. The grief of his daughter’s actions overcame him, and right before my eyes he ages like twenty years. I knew she had it out for Aspen, hell she tried to set it up for her to be gangbanged and raped on film, but to betray your own pack? There's no coming back from that. In time she may have been forgiven for all the atrocities she committed against Aspen, but betrayal to your pack is final. There is no greater crime than that. She might as well slit her own throat now, because to the pack, she’s already dead.

“Yes, that fucking cunt let the enemy through our gates and literally gave them the roadmap to where to hit us the hardest.”

“Where is she now?” I growl ready to cut her down myself. Consequences be damned, she deserves it.

“Gone. Aspen’s father took her too,” Ethan answers, and I grind my teeth agitated. Not only is Aspen gone, but she also has to deal with Kassie on top of that.

“I hope she kills her,” Aspen’s mother growls and we all turn our head to look at her. “Kassie I mean. I hope my daughter rips her throat out and drenches the earth with her blood,” she clarifies before pushing Alpha’s hand away and leaving the room.

“How long will it take for Logan to recover?” I ask Ethan.

“A day, two tops,” he answers. Thanks to Aspen’s blood he’s healing a whole lot quicker.

“Then we have that long to come up with a plan to get
our girl back,” I reply and he nods.

  Aspen

I can’t believe I’m on my way back to Wolfhaven. That because of the selfishness of one wicked girl, I’m headed to the unknown. I never thought with the reception I first received with the Greywolf Pack that I would miss being there, but things have changed. I’ve changed. I know now what real love feels like. What it’s like to have real friends, and because of the crying bitch in the seat beside me I’ve lost it all, and have been handed over to the devil. Now I know exactly how awful my father is. Who the real villain of this story is. It was never me. It was always him. Good thing I’m stubborn. I will get back to my mates. I don’t care if I have to kill him in the process. Wolfhaven won’t break me, because I am my mother’s daughter.

Laying my head against the cool glass, I close my eyes and try to rest. We have a long ride ahead of us and I need to restore my energy from the battle. Who knows what my father has planned once we get back to Wolfhaven, especially now that he knows I have special abilities. I should have never outed myself. I should have let the mage kill Kassie. If I knew she was the one who let them in in the first place, I would have. I can’t fathom what the hell she was thinking to call my father, out of all people? Jealousy is not a reason to lose your damn mind. Now she has fucked us both. Not only did my father take me, but he took her too. At least I have people who will come for me. She’s as good as dead. No way in hell will the pack fight to get her back. Me? Well, that’s a different story. They may not know me that well, but my actions were noble and not selfish like hers. I sacrificed myself for my mates, my mother, and her pups, the future of the pack. I used to be a mean girl, but I reformed myself and Kassie is nothing but a wicked bitch.

“Aspen, what are we going to do?” She asks between sniffles.

Turning towards her, I give her the most disgusted look I can muster. She did not just ask me that?

  “Aspen,” she tries again.

“I’m going to wait for my mates to come for me. I don’t know what the fuck you’re going to do,” I tell her harshly.

“My father will send help, won’t he?”

I want to laugh at her. If Tyler does try to order members from the pack to rescue her, I don’t see him being Alpha much longer. It was his daughter that put the pack he’s supposed to keep safe in danger in the first place. It’s her hands that are soaked in blood. No one is coming for her and as soon as she gets that through her head, the better.

“Your father will send help for me. You? That’s another story,” I reply and her face falls.

“I don’t believe you. You’re just saying that to be a bitch.”

“No, I’m just being truthful. You’ll be better off bargaining for your life with my father. You’re good at talking to him,” I deadpan. “Maybe he’ll let you go,” I offer, narrowing my eyes at her. There's no need for me to remind her if she had never called him in the first place, we wouldn’t be here right now.

“You’re wrong. Just you wait and see. My father loves me,” she says, taking a jab at me, but for once, I don’t care. I’m over my daddy issues.

The ride seemed to go by slowly, more so than when my mother had us fleeing from my father and his pack. Probably due to the fact she was trying to put as much distance between us and my father as fast as possible, and only took breaks when she needed to. My father on the other hand, was in no rush. Currently, the wanker is sitting up front in the passenger seat with a smug smile on his face, thinking he has won. He’s mad if he thinks mum would let me go so easily. He’s always underestimated her, and that will be his downfall. Just like when he was surprised she broke our link to the pack. With the help of my mates, she’ll get me the hell out of here. I just have to be patient and wait.

Through the rest of the drive, I ignore Kassie as well as my father when he tried to ask me questions. Does he actually think I’ll play traitor after he stole me away? He’s better off conversing with Kassie if he wants intel on Tyler’s pack. If I wasn’t pretending to be asleep, I was lost in my head, thinking about my mates and all the good times we had. There weren’t a lot since most of the time I spent with them, they were out making my life hell, tormenting me because of a misunderstanding started by our parents. They thought I didn’t care about them. All they had to go by was the way I used to treat them when we were younger. I was a mean girl and mostly focused my wrath on them. But I have grown since then, and in the last month, I have really turned myself around. I saw with my own eyes what rotten girls turn into, and there's no way in hell would I ever want to be anything like Kassie.

When we pull up to the mansion, my father’s goons waste no time pulling Kassie and I out of the car and into the house. We were back in my childhood home and I hated every second of it. The house still held a cold feeling, far colder than the frosted air outside. As usual, the house is meticulously clean. Nothing is out of place, ever. My father is too anal for that and has killed many of his Omegas for something as small as a crooked picture frame.

“Escort my daughter and the Greywolf traitor to Aspen’s room. I’ll deal with them later,” my father orders, not even bothering to spare us a glance before he heads off to his office. Apparently, his day of spreading evil isn’t over yet.

Tugging harshly on my arm, Douglas, one of my father’s Betas, pushes us up the stairs. Tired of being pushed around, I yank my arm from Douglas and growl, “I know the way, arsehole.” When I get to my room, I fold my arms in front of me and watch as Douglas pushes Kassie through the door hard enough for her to trip on the rug, and land on her ass before he slams the door shut and locks it, judging by the low clicking sound I hear.

“What now?” Kassie asks as she rises from the floor.

“Now, you’re going to stop talking to me, or you won’t have to worry about my father killing you, because I will.”

“Aspen really, don’t you think you should let that shit go? It was the past and we need each other to survive if we want a future.”

“Let it go?” I yell. "When turning traitor did you lose your damn mind?” My body was shaking as uncontrollable anger rises to the surface. "You single handedly orchestrated for me to be filmed while my virginity was stolen from me by being raped and gangbanged. I’ll never let that shit go,” and to drive in my point, I allow my flames to appear in my hand, making her shriek back in fear. “I don’t need you Kassie, nor will I be the one to save you. You better hope your father still loves you as much as you think he does, because as far as I am concerned, you’re on your own.”

With that, I lay on my bed and pull the covers over my head, signalling the end of the conversation. When my father does get around to summoning us, I’ll make sure to tell him Kassie needs to be moved to her own room, or risk me killing his leverage over Tyler.

  Ethan

I have to hand it to my brother. As soon as he could sit up, he was jumping off the bed and springing into action. When he first became conscious, I told him what happened to Aspen. My brother has a soft heart and I thought the news would shatter him, but instead, it fueled him to speed up his recovery. We’re both packing when our father walks in and stops in his tracks as he takes us in.

“What the hell do you two think you’re doing?”

“What does it look like?” Logan says incredulously. “We’re going to get our mate back.”

“You can’t go to Wolfhaven alone, that’s fucking suicidal.”

“We’re not going alone. Mekka is coming with us,” I tell him as I continue to pile clothes in a duffle bag. I don’t know how long we’ll be gone or if we’re ever coming back. It all depended on if we get our girl back, and then it’s her decision if she wants to come back here or not.

“Will you two just stop for a second and think this through? Three halfcocked pups are not going to get Aspen back. You need a plan, and most importantly, wolves to back you up,” dad says, trying to reason with us. “This kind of behavior is something I expect from you Logan, but E
than, you’re smarter than this.”

“Dad, if you expect me to wait around while my mate is in danger, then you don’t know me as well as you think you do,” I growl.

“It’s not just waiting if you’re being diligent and helping with the planning and arrangements to get her back. It’s not like you’ll just be here sitting on your ass. We’re a pack, not lone wolves. We will not leave our own at the mercy of that madman,” he says, exasperated.

“Sorry dad. I promised Aspen I would come for her. I can’t wait around. You can send help to aid us once you have everything planned, but me, Logan, and Mekka are leaving today.”

“Besides dad, it’s not like the pack has their shit together right now. They’re still arguing over even going, having lumped Aspen along with Kassie’s betrayal. Wolves are turning on Alpha left and right. He’s spending more time reigning them in than actually thinking of a plan to rescue our girl,” Logan huffs out agitated.

Since Logan awakened, Alpha has been challenged three times, and two more while Logan was still out of it. Alpha won all of them, but it has taken a toll on him. Aspen’s mother refuses to even look at Alpha and has taken up residency in another suite of rooms, well away from his. Not to mention all of the injured we’re still dealing with. Shifters heal quickly, but magical wounds take a bit longer. The pack is in chaos. No one but us is thinking about getting Aspen back, they’re all far too busy trying to survive the next minute.
